THE STRANGE DISAPPEARANCE
OF COMRADE KULIAKOV

2021

The Strange Disappearance of Comrade Kuliakov is an Estonian-Russian comedy-drama film written by Lucas Abrahão and André Almeida and directed by Lucas Abrahão. This film is one of my favourites from my friends, and I found it delightful to design the credits, even if they didn’t require much effort.

The film is primarily in Russian and follows two soldiers from the USSR as they attempt to find their superior officer in the wintry Estonian countryside. Although unassuming at first (and fitting quite neatly into the drama genre), the film takes a turn and becomes a comedy with a twist that I certainly didn’t see coming.

These traits of the film were encapsulated in its title and credit design. At the beginning of the film, the director and I agreed that the title should appear in deep red and with a subdued size, providing no hint as to the comedy to come (which includes an ABBA song). The end credits were displayed in static title cards, and the film’s overall typeface was a very minimalistic sans-serif.
