1000 is an Estonian black-comedy film written and directed by the immutably talented Nevena Semova, and shot by Swapnil Arjun. The film was largely a passion project by the writer-director, who is usually employed as a film producer. Considering my history with delivering pristine credits for some of her previous films, the director asked me to collaborate on this project as well, which I was all too happy to do. This film is the perfect balance of whimsical and poignant.

The film follows a middle-aged woman who works in a cemetery with the sole job of burying the dead. After having buried 999 people, she sets out to celebrate her pending 1000th burial, but all goes wrong the way only Murphy’s law can predict.

When designing the credits for the film, I was quite largely reminded of Yorgos Lanthimos and his penchant for the absurd and mercurial comedy. More specifically, I reminisced on The Favourite, the brilliant 2018 film that earned Olivia Colman her Oscar. The credits for the film were, quite frankly, sublime, and I desperately wanted to incorporate the same style in this film.

Designing these credits was time-consuming, to say the least. But the end product is well worth the effort. The design incorporates a block format, wherein the roles and names of the crew and cast were strictly confined to a justified box using an elegant serif typeface.
