ALL THE STARS WE CANNOT SEE
2018
All the Stars We Cannot See is a 10-minute experimental film written and directed by me during the last year of my undergraduate degree in South Africa. The narrative about a man and woman who both live in the same apartment at different times. They are both plagued by horrendous nightmares that bring their identities into question. These credits were among the first that I had ever designed for a film, and so they are not my best work. But they do have a certain charm that makes them endearing to consider.
The credits feature an end crawl with a scaled-down serif typeface, with all names and roles written in lowercase. The decision to do this was driven by the film’s narrative, where the characters are depicted in a state of identity crisis against the backdrop of a carceral society.
Putting the names of the cast and crew in lowercase also drew similarities to that of author bell hooks, who deliberately wrote her name in lowercase in order to highlight the message of her work rather than herself.
