AVERSION

2018

All the Stars We Cannot See is a 12-minute psychological drama film written and directed by me as the last project of my undergraduate degree in South Africa. The story follows a young woman brought into a questionable clinic with the sole purpose of converting her sexuality. While there, she encounters another patient, a male, who has been subjected to torture in the name of this conversion therapy. Together, they find a way to escape.

Since the film was shot in an abandoned hospital in the east of Johannesburg in South Africa, I decided to reflect this mood and texture in the credits by featuring an end crawl with a rough “asphalt” typeface.

Although the references that appear here show white text on a black background, I think I recall deciding to invert the colours and have black text on a white background, which ended up being used in the final product. In hindsight, I don’t believe this choice was a good one, which is why I have never again designed credits using this colour schematic. Alas, making art is all about learning what works and what doesn’t.
